Family Selection Committee

The volunteer Family Selection Committee of Habitat for Humanity PEI works directly with the Program Manager and applicant families. The committee is responsible for studying the applications to determine whether the criteria for home ownership is met, for interviewing the applicants, and making recommendations to the Program Manager and CEO regarding qualifications for the program.

  • Reviewing completed applications with the Program Manager and making an initial determination on suitability

  • Following up with applicant families to gather further information, clarify unclear information, and to inform families they are moving ahead in the application process – notifications that families will not be moving forward will be done by the Program Manager

  • Referring families to our partner credit counsellor and explaining this process

  • Accompanying the Program Manager on a home visit to assess living conditions and to conduct an in-person interview.

  • Accompanying the Program Manager on a final meeting to go over finances, budgets, and explain next steps.

  • Make a final recommendation on suitability for the Habitat for Humanity PEI home ownership program and submit recommendation report to Program Manager.

  • Accompany Habitat PEI CEO and Program Manager to meetings to deliver the good news if a family is approved for the program.

Desired Skills and Traits

  • Compassion and tact.

  • Ability to also temper compassion with a realistic attitude, recognizing when a Habitat for Humanity home would be more of a burden than a blessing for the applicant.

  • A high level of confidentiality due to the sensitive nature of information shared.

As needed during evaluation window (November – March) and as agreed upon outside of evaluation window.
